2009 Ossian is a verdejo impossible to compare to other verdejo monovarietals. To begin with, the vines are from 100 to 200 years old, thanks to the sandy soils, which preserve the plants from the phylloxera. As a result, the bunches are really small, with tiny berries that produce an extremely concentrated juice. The vineyards, organically farmed, are planted at 3000 feet, higher than any other in the Rueda region, helping the fruit to reach a balanced ripeness. Last but not least, the wine spent 10 months in french oak barrels, adding a layer of creamy oak flavors that certainly help Ossian to show its intricate personality. I find it very reminiscent of Puligny Montrachet with the minerality.
