Mencia from Ribeira Sacra tends to be a bit more delicate and perfumed than the wines from neighboring Bierzo. But with the delicacy there is no sacrifice in the power and intensity of the flavors. The 2009 Costoya Alodio has youthful aromas of dark cherry, licorice, and pungent herbs. It's juicy and fresh, with moderately fleshy bitter cherry and anise flavors that are supported by a firm mineral spine. It finishes with dusty tannins and a trail of spicy minerals.
