2005 Vina Magana Calchetas Magnum

Vina Magana is winery that pushes the envelope in Navarra.  One of the first to work extensively with Merlot (before it was a legal varietal in the D.O.) and also has plantings of Malbec (but don't tell the D.O. that either), they make some pretty serious wines.  The 2005 Calchetas earned 95 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate.

". . .composed of 50% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon & 15% Malbec aged for 19 months in 500-liter French oak. Opaque purple-colored, it delivers a complex perfume of pain grille, mineral, earth spice box, black currant, & black cherry. Bordering on opulent, with layers of ripe, sweet fruit and great balance, this full-flavored effort needs 4-6 years of additional cellaring to reveal its full potential."
