Castillo Ygay is a Gran Reserva Rioja made by Marques de Murrieta in only the best of vintages. 2001 was an excellent year in Rioja and this wine reflects that season's perfect growing conditions. It is made from 93% Tempranillo and 7% Mazuelo grown in the Finca Ygay estate that gives this wine its name. This is a very traditional wine, aged for many years in oak and then many more years in bottle before release. It is light in color and texture, low in alcohol and displays an elegant balance of fruit to oak. It can be enjoyed now or kept for many years to come.
92 points International Wine Cellar: "Deep ruby-red. Ripe red berry and cherry aromas are complicated by vanilla, pipe tobacco and potpourri. Fleshy, palate-coating redcurrant and cherry compote flavors deliver solid punch and pick up floral pastille and smoky nuances with air. The long, seamless finish repeats the deep cherry note and leaves dusty minerals and spices behind. This is delicious now but has the depth and balance to age effortlessly."
