Amazingly, at 20 years of age this wine is still at the beginning of its evolution. And it's already something truly special. Lopez de Heredia is one of the most traditional producers in Rioja. They allow their Gran Reservas to age for extremely long in barrel and bottle before release. Because of the way their produced and aged the wines can seemingly age forever and, not only that, continue to evolve and get even better. Really special stuff.
The 1991 Lopez de Heredia Vina Bosconia received 94 points from the International Wine Cellar - "Amber-edged, fading red. Compelling bouquet of dried red fruits, rose, lavender, anise and gingerbread. Deep, velvety red fruit flavors are surprisingly lithe, with candied floral and licorice qualities contributing complexity. Gains sweetness with air and finishes long, with strong mineral and floral qualities. For this much complexity in an aged Burgundy, you'd likely pay twice as much."
